Children
While community models are extremely important at bringing all local people and groups together, a model of that size can be unruly and may be slow to address the needs of specific demographics or individuals. It is for that reason that smaller, more focused groups often form coalitions or alliances. These coalitions are comprised of completely separate entities, yet they communicate and align themselves relative to the great need and available resources.
To address the needs of children, Golden's organizations have a comprehensive set of programs and services. Some of these programs are coordinated via the Early Childhood Development Coalition (ECDC).
Generally, those individuals 0 to 12 years of age are considered to be children. And Golden's organizations have split this demographic further into 0 to 6 and 7 to 12. The Early Childhood Development Coalition (ECDC), arguably the best-organized coalition, or "group of groups," is focused on the issues of 0 to 6 year olds and their families. This group, and many others, was formed as a provincial initiative and it has stuck due to the openness of the members and the support of Joanne McCullough, ECDC Coordinator.
For approximately 10 years, the Golden Early Childhood Development Coaliton (ECDC) has met regularly to coordinate "a network of quality programs and services for children and families based on our growing understanding of the importance of Early Childhood Development."
However, while discussed by a few local individuals, there is not a "middle years" coalition or group in place to discuss the needs of those 7 to 12 years of age. The newly formed Golden Youth Coalition meets to address the needs of those 12 to 18 and up to 30 years of age.

Golden ECDC
The Golden ECDC, hosted by GCRS, has a distribution list of 70 local and regional partners. They meet every other month and collaborate to address the needs of families with children from newborns to 6 years of age.
The ECDC's work has led to the creation of many new programs and services, including a provincial pilot, Early Years Centre (EYC), located in the Patlar Building. And an integral stakeholder, comprised of a few ECDC members, ELCSAG has been instrumental in the planning and development of a public childcare centre, soon to be built at Alexander Park Elementary School.
