Efficiencies
Consolidation
While many groups start with the best intentions of forming a unique organization, fulfilling a community need, providing a previously unoffered service and serving a particular market, over time groups’ missions may grow, overlap and merge. Perhaps two organizations see the high percentage of their budgets dedicated to separate general and administrative costs (insurance, rent, utilities, communications, staffing, etc.) and would like to reduce them in order to better fulfill their mission and reallocate resources.
To feel out this process, organizations may start with a service contract that sees one organization provide administration to the other. The two organizations and their Board of Directors are still legally distinct at this stage.
For a permanent change, consolidation through a amalgamation is possible. In BC, amalgamation usually requires the creation of new society and dissolution of the old society.
In other circumstances, a dissolution or 'wind down' of an organization is in order. This process is intended to officially dissolve the organization. It's important to note that dissolution should not be seen as a failure, but merely a natural process in non profit organization development.
