Non Profits
Assessment
In the past, when faced with a crisis, non profit organizations often don't know where to turn. At this pivotal stage, the wrong decision can have disastrous consequences for the organization, its staff, its volunteers and clients, and the entire community.
There is a network of resources available to non profits that helps them determine their strategic plan, whether they are ready for a social enterprise, and how to develop their volunteers. A few of these resources are listed below.

BC Society Act
Before we try to create change, we must understand the rules of the system. It is every Director's duty to know and understand BC Society Act.
Glen Ewan, Q.C. provides a free workshop titled, Personal Liability Traps for Directors of Non Profit Groups, that every new Director should attend.
This well-attended course is being offered again this fall. Glen Ewan, Q.C., will discuss the legal duties and potential personal liability of directors of Clubs, Associations and other Societies. This is a must course for everyone volunteering with their favourite non-profit group. Note: Although there is no charge for this workshop, it is most important that students pre-register with the College of the Rockies (COTR) - Golden Campus (250-344-5901) to guarantee space availability, and to ensure that the workshop will run.

Enterprising Non Profits BC
Enterprising Non Profits, enp, is a unique collaborative program that
promotes and supports social enterprise development and growth as a means to
build strong non profit organizations and healthier communities in four provinces across Canada. The enp Program uses the term "social enterprise" to refer to business ventures operated by non-profits, whether they are societies, charities, or co-operatives. While there focus is on social enterprise (revenue generation activities for non profit organizations), they spend much of their time helping organizations assess whether they are ready and how to plan for social enterprise activities.
In order to receive financial support towards one of eight planning phases, non profit organizations need to attend a ENP BC workshop. Each year, ENP makes a stop in the Columbia Valley, and have visited Golden in 2009 and 2011.
