Health & Social Services
While community models are extremely important at bringing all local people and groups together, a model of that size can be unruly. It is for that reason that smaller, more focused groups often form coalitions or alliances. These coalitions are comprised of completely separate entities, yet they communicate and align themselves relative to the great need and available resources.
In Golden, our best organized coalition is the Early Childhood Development Coalition (ECDC). Thankfully, this group, and many others, was formed as a provincial initiative and it has stuck due to the openness of the members and the support of Joanne McCullough, ECDC Coordinator.
However, a community's health and social services encompass many more organizations and programs than one dedicated to a 6-year-wide age group. Many of these services are offered by Provincial Ministries and one cannot forget about the Interior Health Authority, which are neither businesses nor non profit organizations.
So, is the Golden & Area A community operating optimally from a health and social service perspective? If not, what can be done collectively in order to improve decision-making, resource allocation and serve the needs of the community?

Coalition Meeting: Accounting Alignment - May 27, 2015
Cariboo Chilcotin Child Development Centre Association's Nancy Gale & the Central Interior Community Services Cooperative's Finance Manager, Susan Stoddart, are available to discuss accounting for multiple organizations in Golden. Let's hear how Williams Lake came together!
Thanks to everyone that completed the Doodle poll and shared your availability with the Health & Social Services Coalition: http://doodle.com/makkbpi7f46dmamr
Health & Social Service coalition organizations have different sources of revenue and reporting requirements. While this makes it very difficult to compare non profit organizations, there are some strong commonalities worth examining.
What are the possibilities for Golden? A co-op? A cooperatively owned building? Or the status quo?
Nancy & Susan have offered to visit Golden for 2 days in May, and work with senior staff, accounting staff and Treasurers in Golden's non profits.
Here are the results of the Community Collaboration "Accounting Survey".

Accounting in Health & Social Service Organizations
The backbone of all health & social service organizations is accounting. Each organization has different sources of revenue and reporting requirements. While this makes it very difficult to compare non profit organizations, there are some strong commonalities worth examining.
Golden's Health & Social Service organizations began looking at their annual financial statements together in 2013. Participating organizations offered their annual reports and a consolidated Income Statement and Balance Sheet was created. This exercise showed the collective size of the sub-sector in Golden (~$2M in annual revenue), but more importantly, it showed how each organization recognizes it's revenue and expenses.
The list of expense categories was very long. When reviewing this, the participating staff signaled it would be worth examining alignment of terms, provided they still met their contractual obligations (to funders) and provided some synergy opportunities (cost savings or increased efficiency/effectiveness).

Event: Managing Non Profit Spaces with Nancy Gale
On November 6th, Nancy Gale of the Central Interior Community Services Cooperative (CICSC) provided a thorough overview of this very successful umbrella organization in Williams Lake, BC. Hosted by The Island Restaurant, 17 local residents came to hear where the CICSC started and what they have accomplished over the last 10 years.
Interestingly enough, it was accounting issues and similarities that provoked the conversation about coming together in the same building. Over time, and by building trust, 5 groups came together physically and now collaborate through weekly meetings.
The entire slide presentation can be found below.

Events: Golden Food Bank & Social Services Meeting
This project began engaging the health and social service groups on July 14, 2013 through a Golden Food Bank Society lunch meeting at The Island Restaurant.
While the Food Bank's presentation on Food Bank's of the Columbia Basin focused on their findings from other Basin communities, they finished with some really tough questions:
"What would Golden look like if there was no food bank?
What would we as a community need to do?"
These are great questions for all organizations to ask of themselves (staff and volunteers) to test if their organization is the best vehicle for a particular service and to see if there are other organizations out there who need help themselves.
What would Golden look like if there your organization didn't exist?
What would we as a community need to do?
The presentation from the Golden Food Bank and the Community Coordination project can be found below.

Events: GCRS Staff Meeting
On July 30, 2013, GCRS Staff sat down for a conversation about the Community Coordination project. GCRS is the largest social service non profit organization in Golden and together they offer 17 different programs for children & families, youth, and seniors. With this broad scope, the group debated the following questions with Golden & Area A visitors & residents and staff & volunteers in mind:
Does each community group know about the social services and volunteer opportunities available to them?
Can they get the information and service easily or are they hidden, only available after qualification, or sporadic?
Do the programs & services offered align with the needs of the community’s groups?
And are we utilizing available resources in a way that plans for solving issues or just maintenance?
At the end of the meeting actions items were collected and will be shared through the PDF below.
